Stem Cell Therapy for Knee Pain
Dr. Fodor provides stem cell therapy for knee arthritis in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and surrounding areas of California.
WHAT IS STEM CELL THERAPY FOR ARTHRITIC KNEES?
Stem cell therapy is an effective, safe alternative to knee replacement surgery that may relieve conditions such as arthritis. Stem cells are gaining popularity in the field of medicine as they have the innate ability to transform into many other different types of cells, and thus have been used to treat a wide variety of diseases, including other joint conditions such as avascular necrosis, knee meniscal tears and other acute and chronic injuries.
Clinical use of stem cell therapies is not FDA approved at this time, however, leading researchers, including Dr. Fodor, are conducting a study approved by the International Review Board (IRB) to determine how effective the use of stem cells is for the treatment of arthritis of the knees.
Because this type of stem cell therapy employs use of the patient’s own cells, the risks of rejection or of the patient contracting other communicable diseases is nonexistent unlike when another person is the donor of the stem cells.
HOW IS STEM CELL THERAPY FOR ARTHRITIC KNEES PERFORMED?
Through studies conducted at UCLA, researchers, including Dr. Fodor, learned more than a decade ago that subcutaneous fat is abundantly rich in stem cells. A single stem cell therapy will be given to each patient. Dr. Fodor uses a device provided by The GID Group, which isolates stem cells from fat aspirated through liposuction. The isolated stem cells will be introduced in the arthritic knee joints under precise ultrasonic control. The result of the therapy will be assessed with patient questionnaire scores in regards to pain and range of motion. The thickness of the knee joint cartilage will be evaluated with ultrasonography before and after the treatment.
How Much Does STEM CELL THERAPY Cost?
Dr. Andrew Blecher, specializing in primary care sports medicine, will evaluate interested patients to assess if they qualify to be enrolled in the study. The cost for stem cell therapy will be limited to the cost of the operating room and anesthesia (approximately $5,000.00) Drs. Fodor and Blecher, the Investigators, will donate their time and expertise. The single use stem cell isolating device is being donated by the manufacturer; The GID Group. Dr. Fodor also received a research grant for this study from the Aesthetic Society’s Research Education Foundation (ASERF) which will defray other costs.
Where Will my STEM CELL THERAPY Be Performed?
The entire procedure takes approximately two hours. Patients have the option to request additional body sculpting or other aesthetic surgical procedures which can be completed at the same time as the stem cell therapy. A customary fee will be charged for any additional procedure.
